Activities implemented:
  • Participated in and provided technical advice to all quarterly RVAC meetings.
  • Continued supporting annual Southern African Regional Climate Outlook Forum.
  • Member of SADC Post-2016 Strategic Plan and Funding document Technical Working Group.
  • Supported roll out of IPC among NVACs, through: an IPC awareness meeting in Lesotho, two IPC
  • Acute Level 1 trainings and food security analyses in Swaziland and Mozambique, an IPC chronic pilot analysis in Zimbabwe, assessing challenges to IPC institutionalization in the region, and supporting IPC Global Support Unit high-level mission to Botswana.
  • Supported Expert Group Meeting to upgrade guidance on integration of HIV, gender and nutrition in vulnerability assessment and analysis (VAA).
  • Helped Lesotho, Malawi, Swaziland and Zimbabwe to integrate HIV, gender and nutrition in VAA.
  • Organized a learning event on integrating HIV, gender and nutrition in FAO programmes and a subregional workshop on “Gender Mainstreaming for Improved Agricultural Growth”.
  • Developed a FAO El Niño Response Plan for Southern Africa to guide the response and for resource mobilization and provided technical inputs to RIASCO Southern Africa Humanitarian Outlook reports and key messages on the impact of El Niño in southern Africa.
  • Provided technical inputs to: SADC Stakeholder Consultative Meeting on Preparedness and Response to the Impacts of the 2015/16 El Niño on Agriculture and Food and Nutrition security in Southern Africa; SADC Regional Coordination Centre; SADC Resilience Strategy; validation of SADC Regional Preparedness and Response Strategy and Fund; side event on “Nutrition, HIV and Gender Integration in El Niño Response” during the global El Niño meeting in Geneva; a technical meeting on health consequences of El Niño, organized by WHO.
  • Enhanced stakeholders’ knowledge and awareness of the food security and nutrition situation in southern Africa.
  • Strengthened VAA and helped NVACs produce quality HIV-, gender- and nutrition-sensitive reports.
  • Enabled national stakeholders such as governments and NGOs to strengthen emergency preparedness, response and early recovery capacities.
