Objective:

To restore food security and livelihoods of small-scale coconut farming households severely affected by Typhoon Haiyan by diversifying sources of income and rehabilitating beach forests and mangroves, placing coconut communities on a path of resilient and inclusive economic growth.

Key partners:

Department of Agriculture, Department of Agrarian Reform, Philippine Coconut Authority and Local Government Units (LGUs).

Beneficiaries reached:

6 000 households (30 000 people) and 110 community-based organizations (CBOs).

Activities implemented:
  • Distributed 1 479 bags of certified rice seeds to 1 538 households and 1 160 bags of corn seeds to 1 039 households, along with fertilizers. An additional 932 households received only fertilizer.
  • Distributed 61 750 cassava stalks to 1 307 households and 2 420 pieces of rambutan to 242 households (which had also received cassava stalks).
  • Distributed 71 carabaos, 596 goats and 480 piglets (along with feed) among 927 households, and provided 12 LGUs with veterinary kits. An additional 86 carabaos and four goats will be distributed by the end of November 2015.
  • Provided animal-drawn farm implements, large farm machinery and small farming tools to 118 households and 107 CBOs.
  • Established five nurseries and 16 contour farming sites using Sloping Agricultural Land Technology, and provided beneficiaries/CBOs in these sites with inputs (seeds, planting materials, tools) to initiate production.
  • Provided all beneficiaries (6 000 households) with post-harvest materials and basic household production packages.
  • Conducted trainings on: farm and garden layout; crop care and maintenance; pre-/post-harvest handling and vegetable food preparation; mangrove rehabilitation and management; livestock production and management; entrepreneurship and asset building; vulnerability, risk assessment and mapping; and climate-resilient farming.
Impact:
  • Contributed to restoring agricultural production by providing alternative coconut-based farming livelihoods.
  • Reduced beneficiaries’ expenses related to production and post-harvest activities, increasing their savings.
  • Enabled greater crop diversification through intercropping of several vegetables, planting materials, etc.
  • Increased beneficiaries’ awareness of potential hazards in their communities, and increased preparedness for future disasters by equipping them with the skills necessary to prevent losses and reduce risks.
