Full title of the project:
Agroforestry system rehabilitation, community-based tree nurseries establishment and improved food security for communities in Region IVB
Contribution:
USD 1 375 516
26/03/2014-25/09/2015
Project code:
OSRO/PHI/407/FIN
Objective:
To restore the local livelihood base and improve food security and nutrition through the rehabilitation and establishment of agroforests and community-based tree nurseries and household food security practices in affected areas of Region IVB.
Key partners:
Department of Agriculture, Department of Agrarian Reform, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Local Government Units (LGUs) and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples.
Beneficiaries reached:
3 000 households (15 000 people) and 34 community-based organizations (CBOs).
Activities implemented:
- Distributed 554 bags (22 160 kg) of certified rice seeds and 1 108 bags (55 400 kg) to 554 households, and 2 000 bags (10 000 kg) of corn seeds to 2 000 households.
- Provided 3 000 households with hand tools, post-harvest equipment and basic household production packages (vegetable seeds and fertilizer).
- Distributed 24 carabaos, 30 cattle, 697 goats and 232 piglets (along with starter and grower feed) among 879 households, and provided four LGUs and two Provincial Veterinary Offices with veterinary kits.
- Distributed mangrove and agroforest planting materials to 3 000 households.
- Distributed 11 sets of post-harvest food processing equipment to seven CBOs.
- Established four nurseries and two low tunnel protective structures, and provided CBOs managing these sites with inputs (seeds, planting materials, tools) to initiate production.
- Formulated three case studies on good practices (watershed rehabilitation, vermicomposting and mangrove forest rehabilitation) to be replicated in other projects.
- Performed study on existing markets for agroforestry products, market-based problems faced by farmers and types of support needed for expansion and product development.
- Conducted trainings on: agroforestry farm planning and development; nursery operations and management; climate-smart farmer field schools; rice and corn seed production; mangrove rehabilitation; livestock production and management; and entrepreneurship and business planning.
Impact:
- Contributed to restoring agricultural production by providing alternative coconut-based farming livelihoods.
- Reduced beneficiaries’ expenses related to production and post-harvest activities, increasing their savings and reducing debt.
- Enabled greater crop diversification through intercropping of several vegetables, planting materials, etc.
- Contributed to increased productivity of agroforestry systems, and improved the vigour and health of coastal ecosystems through mangrove rehabilitation activities.
