Objective:

To improve the technical capacities of the Central Veterinary Laboratory, particularly in terms of animal food safety diagnostic and/or surveillance capacities.

Key partners:

Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture and the Royal Scientific Society in Amman, Jordan.

Beneficiaries reached:

Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture veterinary services and food safety laboratory.

Activities implemented:
  • Trained five food safety laboratory staff on the development of a manual for improving laboratory quality assurance.
  • Trained six laboratory staff on laboratory safety measures, policies and protocols, personal protective measures and laboratory solid waste management.
  • Trained six laboratory staff on calibration procedures, measurements and calculations.
  • Trained six laboratory staff on microbiological testing methods and their validation, theory and practice of pathogen identification, requirements and procedures for laboratory accreditation, performance and system documentation as well as data quality control.
  • Trained six laboratory staff on chemical analysis methods and their validation, theory and practice of identifying antibiotic residues and preservatives, theory and practice of the detection of elements in food and data quality control.
  • Trained six field staff on food safety concepts, risks and related regulations, food-borne diseases and their epidemiology and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point standards.
Impact:
  • Improved beneficiaries' capacity to address selected microbiological, chemical and biological hazards in food of animal origin.
  • Enabled the development of the quality assurance manual, which will be ready by the end of December 2015.
  • Increased beneficiaries’ knowledge of the management and technical requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standards, as well as practical steps and understanding of Laboratory General Quality Procedures and Laboratory Technical Procedures (ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standards).
  • Enhanced beneficiaries’ skills to further develop and improve the quality of food safety tests by using existing laboratory instruments.
