Objective:
To train affected vulnerable populations in Dohuk and Erbil in order to create new livelihood opportunities for stable income generation.
Key partners:
Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources in Dohuk and Erbil, Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism, Pekawa and the Public Aid Organization.
Beneficiaries reached:
1 680 refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs) and vulnerable host households.
Activities implemented:
- 500 Syrian refugees in Dohuk and Erbil governorates were trained in greenhouse vegetable production and microgardening during two crop growing seasons.
- 400 IDPs and vulnerable host community households in Dohuk and Erbil governorates received 9 200 laying hens, 80 tonnes of poultry feed, 800 feeding and drinking bidders and training on raising and marketing chickens.
- 200 IDPs and vulnerable host community households in Dohuk and Erbil governorates were trained in food processing (dairy and fruit).
- 200 IDPs and vulnerable host households in Dohuk and Erbil governorates received training on beekeeping and honey production, including modern methods of keeping bees, and collecting, processing and marketing honey.
- 380 people from IDP and vulnerable host community households in Erbil governorate were assisted with supplies to repair greenhouses for vegetable production.
Impact:
- Improved food production skills through training in dairy and fruit processing and greenhouse vegetable production.
- Enhanced food security for refugee, IDP and vulnerable host community households by increasing the availability of and access to micronutrients and protein-rich foods through vegetable production, poultry breeding and food processing.
- Increased household income.
- Strengthened national capacity to train beneficiaries in sustainable income-generating livelihood activities.
