Combining FAO’s field experience and technical expertise to support DRR practitioners

A Field Guide to Disaster Risk Reduction in Southern Africa

13/08/2014

Combining FAO’s field experience and technical expertise to support DRR practitioners.

With funding from ECHO, the toolkit has been developed drawing on the extensive practical and technical knowledge of FAO’s experts in its decentralized offices and headquarters, and taking advantage of the Organization’s ability to collaborate with partners across a wide range of sectors. Within the toolkit, various FAO technical divisions and decentralized offices, as well as key partners – COOPI, UNOCHA and UN-Habitat – have co-authored technical briefs. The kit (coordinated by FAO’s Subregional Disaster Risk Reduction Office for Southern Africa) is based on good practices identified over five years of DRR programming and is intended to provided vital training materials for FAO in implementing its Strategic Objective 5 “Increasing the resilience of livelihoods to threats and emergencies”, as well as for NGOs, extension services and others involved in implementing DRR programmes.

The 11 technical briefs that make up the toolkit cover the following topics (PDFs available in English, French and Portuguese):
