Objective:

To enable emergency food production and protect and restore people’s livelihoods in order to improve the food security of displaced people and vulnerable host communities.

Beneficiaries reached:

5 000 households

Activities implemented:
  • Distributed crop and vegetable production inputs as follow: 45.75 tonnes of quality crop seeds (27.45 tonnes of maize and 18.3 tonnes of cowpea); 127 kg of vegetable seeds (amaranth, chinese cabbage, eggplant, okra and tomato); and, 10 000 hoes, 3 170 shovels, 3 170 watering cans and 3 170 rakes.
  • Organized five workshops prior to the distribution of inputs to enable the beneficiary communities to understand and take ownership of project activities.
  • Trained 86 leaders on vegetable production techniques and crop protection.
  • Trained facilitators and established six farmer field schools.
Impact:
  • Produced an average of 598 kg of food per household who received crop production inputs for a total of 1 094 tonnes, and an average of 223 kg of vegetables per household for a total of 706 tonnes.
  • Increased food availability through vegetable and crop production providing a total of 4 million meals (two per day), covering a daily food ration per capita energy requirement (2 200kcal/day).
  • Reinforced the technical capacities of beneficiaries on production techniques and crop protection.
  • Allowed beneficiaries to generate income up to USD 88.72 per month for vegetable production and USD 202 at the end of the first crop production cycle, enabling them to access other foods and to cover other vital needs (school fees, health care, etc.).
  • Contributed to the improvement and diversification of beneficiary households’ diets and encouraged vegetable gardening as a safer economic opportunity and a more regular source of income.
  • Restored seed stocks for the next agricultural season.
