Objective:

To provide direct support to the coordination and planning capacity of the FSL Sector in Northern Sudan.

Key partners:

State Ministries of Agriculture (SMoAs) of West Darfur, Kassala, South Kordofan and Blue Nile; WFP; the Remote Sensing Authority; and the University of Khartoum.

Beneficiaries reached:

SMoA and FAO staff in Northern Sudan, as well as all FSL Sector partners in the targeted states.

Activities implemented:
  • At least one FSL Sector meeting organized each month in Khartoum and every two weeks in the states.
  • Conducted regional priority setting and FSL sector plan development and assisted sector partners in project sheet formulation.
  • Developed standard monitoring data collection format with FSL Sector partners.
  • Established a Sector database.
  • Reviewed and edited sector plans and project sheets at the Khartoum level.
  • Contributed to decision-making on FSL assessment methods and approaches.
  • Provided training in data analysis and reporting for food security and information system core stakeholders.
  • Trained SMoA staff in West Darfur, Kassala, South Kordofan and Blue Nile states in data collection, information collection for raingauges, market data collection and analysis.
  • Provided supporting equipment and tools to each unit to facilitate these tasks.
Impact:
  • Upgraded the technical skills of SMoA staff.
  • Strengthened the capacity of FAO field staff in support of the FSL Sector.
  • Improved coordination of the FSL Sector through an enhanced FSL information system in the targeted states.
  • Supported the identification of vulnerable households to be targeted with assistance through the regular implementation of the Food Security Monitoring System in West Darfur state.
