Objective:

To protect livelihood assets and speed up the recovery of flood-affected vulnerable pastoral and agropastoral households through livestock and crop interventions.

Key partners:

Afar Regional Pastoral, Agricultural and Rural Development Bureau (PARDB) and its four woreda branch offices, and the Werer Agriculture Research Centre.

Beneficiaries reached:

950 agropastoral households (4 883 people), woreda PARDB staff and extension workers.

Activities implemented:
  • 2 783 m of canals rehabilitated in irrigation schemes in Adaar, Awash Fentale, Gewane and Mille woredas.
  • 798 m3 of gabion works were carried out at two of the irrigation schemes.
  • 2 canal intakes were rehabilitated.
  • 2 canal crossings were repaired.
  • 115 m of canals were de-silted in Intiadoyta irrigation scheme (Gewane woreda).
  • 320 irrigation water users and 26 woreda extension staff were trained in irrigation water management (including operating and maintaining irrigation systems, efficient water use, and crop and forage production).
  • Beneficiaries used their own labour to carry out the construction works, while the woredas provided gabions from their budgets and the PARDB purchased pumps.
Impact:
  • 95 ha of a planned 350 ha has already been planted with irrigated crops.
  • The project helped to rehabilitate irrigation schemes that were damaged by floods in 2010, enabling 950 vulnerable agropastoral households to resume irrigated crop production.
