Objective:

To improve the capacity of households in Darfur to overcome seasonal food gaps and conflict-induced strains on their livelihoods through engagement in winter season agricultural production, livestock production and income-generating activities.

Key partners:

State Ministries of Agriculture and Animal Resources, and local and international NGOs.

Beneficiaries reached:

85 734 IDP and host community households.

Activities implemented:
  • 32 475 households provided with 7.9 tonnes of vegetable seeds, 64 950 hoes, 3 530 donkey ploughs, 52 items for water harvesting, 60 treadle pumps and training in winter vegetable production.
  • 742 households received 2 190 goats, 94 donkeys and 250 domestic poultry.
  • Six community nurseries set up, which produced 60 000 tree seedlings, benefiting 3 000 households.
  • 1 016 households received inputs and training for cheese-making and/or food processing.
  • 171 household members were trained as community animal health workers (CAHWs), while a further 4 000 households benefited from the establishment of veterinary drug stores.
  • 883 467 animals were vaccinated and/or treated for common diseases, benefiting 42 000 households.
  • 2 330 households benefited from the local collection of animal fodder to feed animals for two months during the dry period.
Impact:
  • Over 33.7 tonnes of vegetables were produced using inputs provided under the project.
  • Vaccination and veterinary treatment reduced the loss of livestock as a result of contagious diseases and improved the health and productivity of animals.
  • Beneficiaries who received training and equipment for cheese-making and food processing increased their incomes as well as improving household diets and hygiene practices.
  • The CAHWs network has been strengthened, ensuring livestock owners no longer need to travel long distances for animal health services.
