To ensure that available information regarding water and land allows for evidence-based decisionmaking on emergency, rehabilitation, development and natural resource management interventions.

Beneficiaries reached:

Between 1 and 2 million Somalis living in flood-prone areas, as well as NGOs, donors, UN agencies and government institutions.

Activities implemented:
  • 388 interventions and projects supported by SWALIM water and land data.
  • Various systems developed/improved, including Somalia Water Sources Information Management System, Irrigation Information Management System, Combined Drought Index.
  • Early warning information produced and disseminated to partners and humanitarian agencies to support preparedness and response, including over 50 Storm Watch Bulletins, 20 Dedakal Rainfall Updates, 28 Flood Watch Bulletins.
  • SWALIM data used to develop joint UN programme on DRM for Somaliland.
  • SWALIM, with FSNAU and FEWS NET, made 14 presentations to the Inter-Cluster Working Group and Humanitarian Country Team.
  • Over 2 000 requests for information received and responded to, including for assessment, development, education, emergencies, M&E, proposal development, etc.
  • Water and land information resources in support of the Juba and Shebelle River basin updated – more than 80 maps showing status of primary canals in EU-funded ARDOPIS project area produced.
  • 56 training sessions conducted for over 400 Somalis on subjects including drought monitoring, SWIMS, report writing, information management, GPS, map reading, etc.
  • 11 gates of Janaale barrage installed and operational, benefiting farmers on almost 30 000 ha.
  • Monitoring system developed using remote-sensing and high resolution satellite imagery.
  • Contributed to improved natural resource management through establishing climate, river, groundwater and land degradation monitoring networks.
  • Flood monitoring and forecasting serves 1–2 million Somalis, and drought monitoring and early warning serves at least half the Somali population.
  • Data produced is used by decision-makers, planners, designers, operation managers in natural resource-based projects and programmes.
  • Rehabilitated barrages used for irrigation and increases crop production, potentially benefiting up to 50–60 000 farmers.
  • Capacity development of Somali institutions facilitating the transfer of SWALIM activities to Somali centres.
