Objective:

To stabilize livelihoods, and improve food security and rural livelihoods by reducing cattle and goat mortality due to tick-borne diseases through the sustainable control of ticks and tick-borne diseases.

Key partners:

European Union, Help Germany and the Government of Zimbabwe’s Division of Veterinary Field Services (DVFS).

Beneficiaries reached:

642 655 vulnerable livestock owners.

Activities implemented:
  • Distributed 120 tonnes of dipping chemical (aracide) used to dip 33 701 323 cattle and 107 813 goats and sheep.
  • Facilitated study tour for all Chief Animal Health Inspectors to help promote and improve national goat dipping practices.
  • Provided extension support programmes on the management and maintenance of dip tanks and dipping services to livestock-based communities through the training of 741 Veterinary Extension Assistants.
Impact:
  • Strengthened capacity of the DVFS through the training sessions implemented.
  • Improved collection of dipping fees as payment rose from 11—15 percent to 20—70 percent.
  • Increased reporting of disease outbreaks by farmers as dip tanks were operational in the project areas.
  • Reduced incidences of tick-borne disease outbreaks by over 50 percent in five provinces.
  • Improved livestock health and overall food security to livestock-based communities of Zimbabwe.
