Objective:

To reduce vulnerability and risk to food insecurity by building strong and resilient livelihoods among poor rural farming households in the southern Africa region.

Key partners:

National governments, UN agencies, NGOs, donors, and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research.

Beneficiaries reached:

The beneficiaries of the project included members of the United Nations Regional Inter-Agency Standing Committee and the Food and Nutrition Security Working Group.

Activities implemented:
  • Provided leadership and technical support to the Regional Vulnerability Assessment Committee Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Technical Working Group in capacity building, training, lessons learned and institutionalization of IPC.
  • Supported regional and national early warning information and analysis systems, including those pertaining to seasonal rainfall forecasting and monitoring, crop performance and crop forecasting and estimates.
  • Provided technical and coordination support to the Regional Inter-Agency Standing Committee to strengthen emergency preparedness and response in the region, especially as it relates to agriculture and food security.
  • Activated, managed and supported a FAO Emergency Plan of Action in the event of a multiple country or cross-border emergency.
Impact:
  • Improved agricultural emergency preparedness, risk reduction, response, early recovery and linkages with development in Southern Africa.
  • Enhanced information exchange, advocacy and joint programming activities among regional bodies, governments, NGOs and other civil society stakeholders.
