Africa (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Gambia, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Sao Tome, Senegal, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda), Eastern Europe (Moldova, Serbia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan) and Southern Asia (Afghanistan and Pakistan).

Objective:

To reduce the impact of disasters on at-risk populations’ health, and food and nutrition security.

Key partners:

World Health Organization (WHO), Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services, ministries of agriculture, Integrated Seed Sector Development, Action Against Hunger and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammernarbeit.

Beneficiaries reached:

143 personnel from ministries of agriculture, Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) and decentralized Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) offices, 30 recovery specialists and 325 internally displaced person (IDP) households.

Activities implemented:
  • Trained 173 ministry, NGO and FAO staff on Seed Security Assessment and fisheries and aquaculture emergency assessment and response methodology.
  • Developed joint preparedness planning and operational preparedness activities on food and nutrition security and health nexus.
  • Assisted 325 IDP households in Ukraine to establish the production of nutritious food products and improve their food security and agricultural livelihoods.
  • Conducted regional public health emergency management and preparedness training for Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Caucasus countries.
  • Administered a multisectoral capacity assessment for preparedness and disaster risk management, through the United Nations Capacity for Disaster Reduction Initiative partnership.
  • Carried out normative development work to support joint global preparedness.
  • Under WHO leadership, finalized the Inter-Agency Standing Committee Emergency Response Preparedness regional training of trainers’ package.
Impact:
  • Contributed to the global achievement of knowledge transfer, capacity building and preparedness activities.
  • Strengthened the relationship with WHO for better understanding of potential linkages between health and agriculture preparedness.
  • Improved the resilience of populations at risk of, or affected by, disasters that threaten their agriculture, health and food and nutrition security.
  • Reduced the impact of disasters on at-risk populations’ health, and food and nutrition security.
