Emergency support to winter wheat production in the Syrian Arab Republic

Emergency support to winter wheat production in the Syrian Arab Republic

Full title of the project:

Emergency support to winter wheat production in the Syrian Arab Republic

Target areas:

Aleppo, Al-Hasakeh, Hama and Idleb governorates

Recipient:
Contribution:
USD 500 000
15/11/2013-31/08/2014
Project code:
OSRO/SYR/310/USA
Objective:

Improve the food security, livelihood and nutrition conditions of vulnerable households living in crisis-affected areas through the provision of cereal seeds.

Key partners:

Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Federation of Syrian Chambers of Agriculture and Syrian Arab Red Crescent.

Beneficiaries reached:

2 016 households.

Activities implemented:
  • Distributed 426 tonnes of wheat seeds (296 tonnes of irrigated wheat and 130 tonnes of rainfed wheat) to 1 704 households.
  • Distributed 78 tonnes of barley seeds to 312 households.
  • Provided training to 1 133 farmers in the framework of FAO’s 2013/14 winter cereal campaign programme, covering topics such as anti-rust techniques, weeding, harvesting and marketing crops.
Impact:
  • Crisis-affected households harvested an average of 1.8 tonnes/ha – enough to cover the cereal needs of a family of seven people for one year.
  • Each farmer is also expected to have produced around 3 tonnes of fodder/straw, enabling them to feed their animals during winter.
  • The sale of surplus production allowed families to generate additional income to cover expenses and buy new agricultural inputs for the following season.
