Objective:

To increase food availability and income at household and community levels through the treatment of livestock belonging to pastoral and agropastoral households in Puntland and Somaliland.

Key partners:

Beneficiaries reached:

59 085 beneficiary households, government line ministries, local and international NGOs and United Nations agencies.

Activities implemented:
  • Procured over 2.3 million doses of veterinary medicine.
  • Provided timely veterinary treatment to 2 363 410 drought-affected livestock (218 335 animals in Somaliland and 2 145 075 in Puntland) belonging to 59 085 beneficiary households against common infectious diseases including helminthiasis, respiratory conditions and blood parasites.
  • Conducted the 2016/2017 post-Deyr season livelihoods, food security and nutrition assessment across Somalia including the production of 15 integrated nutrition and mortality surveys across rural areas of Somalia.
Impact:
  • Maintained household nutrition through the prevention of livestock losses, with healthy goats, camels and cattle able to provide an important source of dairy protein for pastoralist families.
  • Supported the restoration of pastoralists’ productivity, ensuring that their most important capital asset and source of food and income is maintained.
  • Enhanced the availability of and access to quality information and analysis which formed an evidence base for decision-making in support of humanitarian interventions responding to the protracted drought.
