Objective:

To strengthen FSL Sector coordination mechanisms in Khartoum and the Darfur region for effective, efficient and timely humanitarian response and to restore the agriculture-based livelihoods of 3 000 vulnerable IDP households and host community families in Central Darfur.

Key partners:

State Ministry of Agriculture for Central Darfur, local and international NGOs.

Beneficiaries reached:

3 000 vulnerable households, national and international NGOs, government line ministries and United Nations agencies.

Activities implemented:
  • Procured and distributed 54.7 tonnes of crop, legume and vegetable seeds and 4 000 agricultural tools to 3 000 households (of which 65.8 percent were female-headed) in Central Darfur state.
  • Conducted training of trainers for 300 beneficiary farmers in applied agronomic practices and water and soil harvesting techniques who in turn went on to train a total of 2 700 beneficiary farmers.
  • Conducted awareness-building sessions for 72 Village Development Committees covering the sustainable use and management of natural resources.
  • Trained 75 national NGOs and government line ministry staff in project cycle management, including needs assessments, proposal writing, project management, monitoring and reporting and Accountability to Affected Populations principles.
  • Organized and facilitated 65 Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) Sector coordination meetings in four states of Darfur and in Khartoum throughout 2017.
  • Contributed to the development of the 2017 Humanitarian Needs Overview (HNO) and the 2017 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP).
Impact:
  • Supported the cultivation of approximately 4 431 ha of land and the production of about 6 705 tonnes of food.
  • Enhanced the technical capacities of vulnerable households in agronomic practices and water and soil harvesting techniques.
  • Strengthened FSL Sector partners’ effectiveness in planning and implementing programme activities and increased their access to appropriate information and financial resources.
  • Improved FSL Sector partners’ understanding and participation in HNO and HRP processes and boosted their skills in food security analysis, response planning, coordination and networking.
