Objective:

To strengthen the resilience of populations affected by malnutrition and food insecurity, and reduce the negative impact of food and nutrition crises in West Africa.

Key partners:

UN agencies, Governments and NGOs.

Beneficiaries reached:

Food and nutrition stakeholders intervening in West Africa and the Sahel including: United Nations agencies, NGOs, donors, Governments and the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel. Vulnerable households in the region will also benefit indirectly.

Activities implemented:
  • Organized various workshops on project planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and coordination.
  • Conducted a study on disaster risk reduction in the Kayes region of Mali.
  • Produced documents, including documents on nutrition kits which gathered lessons learned on integrated food security and nutrition programmes in Africa.
  • Participated in regional food security and nutrition coordination meetings.
  • Launched the disaster risk management strategy for West Africa and the Sahel.
  • Trained stakeholders on disaster preparedness capacity, early warning, needs assessment and crisis analysis.
Impact:
  • Strengthened the capacity of stakeholders and partners to better understand the disaster risk management strategy for West Africa.
  • Reinforced beneficiaries’ capacities in terms of maximizing the nutritional benefits of food security interventions.
  • Supported the scaling-up of integrated nutrition-livelihoods-food security interventions.
  • Facilitated the improvement of the food security analysis based on the Cadre Harmonisé approach.
  • Documented the nutritional impact of food security interventions.
  • Ensured that agriculture and food security were regional initiatives for the Emergency Preparedness and Response Working Group.
