Objective:

To improve food security in the areas of Afghanistan where potatoes are a major crop through the eradication of Colorado potato beetle (CPB), an alien invasive pest. The immediate objective of this project was to urgently procure 10 000 litres of pesticide and 300 knapsack sprayers in order to treat an estimated 10 000 infested hectares.

Key partners:

The Plant Protection and Quarantine Department (PPQD) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock.

Beneficiaries reached:

14 835 farmers and 42 government staff.

Activities implemented:
  • Carried out CPB control operations for 14 835 farmers using hand, machine and chemical methods  on 6 430.35 hectares of potato crop.
  • Conducted two workshops (Farmer Awareness Programme) covering the importance, biology and  management of the CPB pest for 14 339 farmers.
  • Conducted four workshops for 42 PPQD staff covering safe and efficient pesticide use, calibration  and use of chemical sprayer, campaign organization and implementation, biology and control of  CPB, GPS and record keeping.
Impact:
  • The pest control operations were successful in all six targeted districts with no reports of damaged  or lost crops.
  • Training activities carried out under the project improved the capacity of national staff in overall  plant protection operations.
