Objective:

To contribute to the protection of productive assets and livelihoods, improving the food security situation of vulnerable populations located in areas with agricultural deficit.

Key partners:

The Ministry of Agriculture and local stakeholders, such as the regional- and district-level Committees for the Prevention and Management of Food Crises, the International Research Institute on Semi Arid Cultures, seed producers’ organizations as well as local and international Non-governmental Organizations.

Beneficiaries reached:

117 700 households.

Activities implemented:
  • Facilitated large-scale introduction of improved seed variety by strengthening the local and national seed multiplication programme.
  • Procured and distributed 700 tonnes of millet, 100 tonnes of sorghum and 287.5 tonnes of cowpea seed to targeted beneficiaries.
Impact:
  • Increased average crop production levels from 501 kg per household to 953 kg per household.
  • Increased the level of household income from harvest sales.
  • Enabled beneficiaries to produce enough food to meet their needs for an estimated five to nine months.
  • Improved the overall food security situation by providing good quality seed, and reducing the vulnerability of crop production to climate related hazards in areas that relying on rain-fed agriculture.
