Objective:

To improve food security and nutrition of vulnerable households in Burkina Faso.

Key partners:

Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Food Security, Direction Générales des Production Vegétales and NGOs including Hundreds of Original Projects for Employment and Association Aidons l’Afrique Ensemble.

Beneficiaries reached:

1 910 food insecure households, or 11 460 direct beneficiaries, as well as food and nutrition security stakeholders.

Activities implemented:
  • Distributed 116 640 g of vegetable seeds including tomato, cabbage, onion, carrot, lettuce and eggplant, 3 000 Moringa plants and 2 000 papaya plants as well as 143 250 kg of fertilizer (NPK and Urea).
  • Provided beneficiaries with phytosanitary products and equipment (pesticides, insecticides and sprayers).
  • Trained 404 beneficiaries on vegetable production techniques and the use of phytosanitary treatment equipment, and 186 beneficiaries on nutrition education.
  • Facilitated two consultation and exchange workshops between Government actors, UN agencies and NGOs to exchange food and nutrition security information.
  • Published 12 monthly analyses of the food situation in the target areas.
Impact:
  • Diversified the diet of beneficiaries through the production of 4 230 tonnes of vegetables.
  • Increased knowledge on good agricultural production techniques, as well as nutrition education.
  • Provided beneficiaries with additional income through the sale of surplus production, each household earned an average of FCFA 175 000.
  • Enabled the two regional Food Security Councils to hold food and nutrition security information meetings every three months.
  • Strengthened the capacity of early warning system relay agents to better analyse, collect and disseminate food security information.
  • Improved coordination among food and nutrition security information stakeholders in the region.
