Activities implemented:

  • Constructed five livelihood centres and provided 14 self-help groups (280 households) with equipment and training in oil processing and cheese making in addition to bookkeeping and centre management.
  • Provided preventive and curative veterinary services to livestock in high risk areas through a community-based delivery system.
  • Provided agricultural inputs (seeds, tools and irrigation equipment) to 3 128 households, as well as training in appropriate cultivation practices, pest and disease control, and operation and maintenance of treadle and motorized water pumps.
  • Provided training of trainers to 826 mostly female-headed households in environmental protection and the manufacturing of fuel efficient stoves.
Impact:
  • The project helped to improve food and livelihoods security through the protection of assets, increased income opportunities and improved diets.
  • Focus group discussions with farmers indicated that the high quality seeds and tools distributed assisted them to cultivate additional land and increase vegetable crop yields.
