Objective:

To assist the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt in its efforts to control HPAI in the domestic poultry population and avoid the risks of human infection.

Key partners:

The project was implemented jointly by FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MALR), including the National Laboratory for Veterinary Quality Control on Poultry Production (NLQP) and the Central Laboratory for Evaluation of Veterinary Biologics (CLEVB). Letters of agreement were signed with Erasmus Medical Centre and the Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory.

Beneficiaries reached:

The main planned direct beneficiary was the MALR, in particular the NLQP.
Indirect beneficiaries included: poultry owners, producers and traders; national veterinary and veterinary public health services; village, district and governorate government animal health and livestock services; as well as the general Egyptian and international population.

Activities implemented:
  • Intensification of field sampling of avian influenza from field cases and identification of positive ones using real time polymerase chain reaction.
  • Isolation of positive cases in specific pathogen-free eggs.
  • Sequencing of the successfully isolated strains coupled with the training of two Egyptian scientists on the subject.
  • Undertaking phylogenetic analysis of the sequencing results.
  • Undertaking cartography analysis and training of two Egyptian scientists on the subject.
  • Selection of strains to be used in challenge against commercial vaccine seed strains in specific pathogen-free, and training of one Egyptian scientist on the subject.
  • Evaluation of vaccine efficacy through the challenge test.
Impact:
  • Improved understanding of the circulating virus and the efficacy of local vaccines.
  • The project provided National Veterinary and Veterinary Public Health services, poultry owners, producers and traders with the efficacy test results of vaccines available in the local market, thus contributed indirectly to providing necessary information for the development of an improved vaccination programme/strategy.
