Objective:

To improve food and nutrition security of 33 000 targeted households in Darfur region.

Key partners:

The Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Animal Resources, and local and international Non-governmental Organizations.

Beneficiaries reached:

33 944 households (approximately 203 664 people), including displaced persons, returnees and host communities.

Activities implemented:
  • Distributed 57.9 tonnes of crop and vegetable seeds to 10 000 households.
  • Provided 6 700 agricultural hand tools to 6 700 farmers that received seeds.
  • Trained 1 797 people (including 812 women) on topics including nutrition, fodder preservation, business management and natural resources management.
  • Vaccinated 617 000 animals belonging to 10 070 households.
  • Trained 75 community animal health workers (CAHWs) who provided treatment services to 7 000 livestock-dependent households.
  • Provided animal health kits to ten female CAHWs to render basic veterinary care in five internally displaced person camps.
  • Distributed 700 lactating goats and 21 tonnes of animal feed concentrate to 140 households.
  • Provided 201.8 tonnes of animal feed concentrate and 4 tonnes of mineral supplements to 2 660 households.
  • Established two private nurseries for the production of fruit trees.
  • Distributed 30 000 assorted tree seedlings to 3 752 beneficiaries.
  • Trained 200 women on the production and use of fuel-efficient stoves.
  • Convened 72 Food Security and Livelihood Sector coordination meetings.
  • Trained 47 state Government and Non-governmental Organization staff on Livestock Emergency Standards and Guidelines.
Impact:
  • Enabled the production of an estimated 915.6 tonnes of food, valued at USD 477 410.
  • Contributed to improving household nutrition through dietary diversification.
  • Enhanced health and productivity of livestock, resulting in increased milk production.
  • Contributed to the protection of beneficiaries’ livestock assets through the improved delivery of animal health services.
  • Provided opportunities for beneficiaries to generate income through the sale of surplus production, fodder and animal products.
