Objective:

To improve the food and nutrition security of flood-affected urban and peri-urban farmers in Dar es Salaam.

Key partners:

Local municipalities of Dar es Salaam, World Vegetable Centre’s Regional Centre for Africa.

Beneficiaries reached:

4 500 farming households

Activities implemented:
  • Procured 283.5 kg of vegetable seeds (seven varieties, five of which were indigenous African varieties).
  • Distributed 4 500 vegetable kits, each containing 63 g of various vegetable seeds.
  • Trained 152 farmers’ group leaders (87 of whom were women) as trainers in lowinput horticulture production and vegetable preparation and processing techniques.
  • Brochure (in Kiswahili) on vegetable cultivation, preparation and nutritional composition was prepared and distributed during the training.
Impact:
  • Approximately 1 000 acres of flood-affected land were cultivated using the seeds provided.
  • Seed kits and training strengthened the production capacity of farmers, extension workers and local government authorities in the three municipalities.
  • Trained farmers returned to their areas and passed the knowledge gained on to other community members.
  • Training improved urban farmers’ access to agricultural support services by linking affected farmers with agricultural extension workers in their municipalities.
