To improve rural livelihoods in vulnerable communities of the West Bank and Gaza Strip by maintaining agricultural activities and restoring farmers’ employment opportunities.

Key partners:

Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) and the Economic and Social Development Centre of Palestine.

Beneficiaries reached:

2 640 beneficiary households (760 in the Gaza Strip and 1 880 in the West Bank, or 15 840 individuals).

Activities implemented:
  • Rehabilitated 280 dunums of orchard demonstration plots with fencing poles for grape plots and avocado plantlets.
  • Distributed 360 irrigation network packages, 8 000 sacks of organic fertilizer and 440 rolls of plastic sheets for mulching to 420 households to rehabilitate 420 dunums of open fields.
  • Rehabilitated 150 dunums of greenhouses with 150 rolls of plastic sheets, 50 rolls of insect-proof nets, 50 double-door systems, irrigation networks, fertilizer and pheromone lure.
  • Constructed 34 rainwater cisterns and two water reservoirs, and rehabilitated nine wells.
  • Rehabilitated 50 small ruminant sheds of 60 metres2 each.
  • Distributed mobile sprayers to 19 herders’ associations and one MoA research station to control small ruminant parasites, and 150 milking machines and 150 butter churns to 300 herder households.
  • Upgraded Al ‘Arrub rangeland nursery with 250 m2 of plastic sheets and 1 000 m2 of shading.
  • Trained 12 farmers’ groups on quality management and marketing skills; 45 laboratory technicians and agronomists on horticulture nurseries management, certification and sanitation; and 450 beneficiaries on integrated pest management, crop management and plant production and good agricultural practices.
  • Improved the quantity, quality and marketability of production through the restoration of assets, rehabilitation of farming infrastructure and increased access to resources.
  • Assisted beneficiaries in restoring their productive capacity and decreasing production costs through optimized irrigation, new varieties of fruit trees and improved small ruminant shed design.
  • Increased accessibility and availability of water for irrigation and livestock, decreasing farmers’ and herders’ reliance on water from expensive tanker trucks.
  • Strengthened the marketing capacity of grassroots farmers’ organizations through training.
