Objective:

To contribute to the improvement of food security for targeted vulnerable farming households whose food security was threatened by low agricultural productivity, natural disasters and conflict.

Key partners:

Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL); Provincial Departments of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (DAIL); and Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs).

Beneficiaries reached:

104 472 farming households.

Activities implemented:
  • Provided 75 972 households with 50 kg of certified wheat seed and 25 kg of fertilizer to cultivate irrigated or rainfed wheat in the autumn 2012 and/or spring 2013 planting seasons.
  • Provided 15 000 households with 50 kg of wheat seed, 100 kg of fertilizer, vegetable seed sachets and hand tools.
  • Distributed 25 kg of fertilizer to 2 500 households to support irrigated wheat production during the autumn 2013 season.
  • Provided 7 000 households with 25 kg of certified wheat seed and 75 kg of fertilizer, and 4 000 households with vegetable seeds and hand tools for the spring 2014 planting season.
  • Conducted three rounds of training on wheat and vegetable production, pests and diseases and post-harvest management (87 403 beneficiaries in the first round, 72 991 in the second round and 66 979 in the third round).
Impact:
  • Achieved an average yield of 3.22 tonnes/ha for irrigated wheat and 1.23 tonnes/ha for rainfed wheat in 2013, and 3.51 tonnes/ha for irrigated wheat in 2014.
  • Produced 113 300 tonnes of wheat valued at USD 45 320 000 (USD 400 per tonne).
  • Copayments totalling USD 715 000 were collected from 75 972 beneficiaries and reinvested in microprojects.
  • Diversified household food consumption and helped families generate income through the cultivation of distributed vegetable seed.
  • Built the technical capacity of farmers through training, enabling them to take full advantage of distributed inputs by adopting improved cultivation techniques.
  • Boosted food production, increased yield and enhanced self-sufficiency in areas of food deficit and restored livelihoods through the provision of high quality agricultural inputs and technical assistance.
