Objective:

To improve the Food Security and Livelihoods Sector coordination at national and state levels for effective and timely humanitarian response and to restore the agriculture-based livelihoods of the most vulnerable IDPs and host communities in Blue Nile and South Kordofan states.

Key partners:

Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, State Ministries of Agriculture for Blue Nile and South Kordofan states, Humanitarian Aid Commission, Government of Sudan authorities at local levels.

Beneficiaries reached:

3 500 vulnerable households, national and international NGOs, government line ministries and United Nations agencies.

Activities implemented:
  • Procured and distributed 32.37 tonnes of crop and vegetable seeds and 9 722 agricultural tools to 3 500 households in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states.
  • Trained 3 500 beneficiary households in Good Agricultural Practices in collaboration with agricultural extension staff from South Kordofan and Blue Nile State Ministries of Agriculture.
  • Conducted awareness-building sessions for 16 Village Development Committees covering the sustainable use and management of natural resources.
  • Trained 75 national NGOs and government line ministry staff in project cycle management, including needs assessments, proposal writing, project management and report writing as well as Accountability to Affected Populations principles.
  • Organized and facilitated 12 Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) Sector coordination meetings at national and state levels.
  • Conducted three pre-and post-harvest assessments and three Crop and Food Security Assessment Missions across targeted states.
  • Contributed to the development of the 2017 Humanitarian Needs Overview and the 2017 Humanitarian Response Plan.
Impact:
  • Supported the production of a total of 1 890 tonnes of sorghum, 105 tonnes of sesame, 84 tonnes of cowpea and 12 950 tonnes of fresh okra which allowed beneficiaries to cover their food and nutrition needs for about six months and generate an additional income of USD 602 per beneficiary household.
  • Enhanced the technical capacities of vulnerable households in crop husbandry and Good Agricultural Practices.
  • Strengthened FSL Sector partners’ effectiveness in planning and implementing FSL Sector programme activities and contributed to a more efficient use of resources thanks to the various assessments and analysis conducted.
  • Improved FSL Sector partners’ understanding and participation in HNO and HRP processes and boosted their skills in food security analysis, response planning and coordination.
