Read more about FAO in emergencies and the Syria crisisThe seven-year Syrian crisis has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and injured countless civilians. As conflict continues, some 6.3 million people remain displaced inside the country. Another 5 million Syrian refugees are living in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, where needs far exceed the resources of host governments and communities. The conflict in Syria is compounded by deepening nationwide hunger with more than half the population unable to meet their daily needs due to factors including heavily constrained humanitarian access. As a result of a real or perceived improved security situation in parts of the country and some supply routes opening, trade is slowly recovering throughout Syria, markets are performing better, and more than 470 000 people have returned home since the beginning of 2017.

Yet, the uncertainty of the conflict continues to result in new displacements, with numbers of internally displaced people (IDPs) increasing in seven out of Syria’s 14 governorates. Despite slightly decreasing in parts of the country, high food prices continue to put pressure on families. Food shortages have resulted in people adopting negative coping strategies.
