Well over half of the population has fled their homes, including 6.1 million people displaced internally and 4.8 million refugees in neighbouring Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, where needs far exceed the resources of host governments and communities. Within Syria, around 9.4 million people are in need of food assistance.
Almost six years of conflict have had a devastating impact on Syria’s agriculture sector. The violence has weakened essential services, depleted agricultural assets and significantly reduced national production capacity. Many farmers cannot access or afford once-subsidized inputs that have soared in price and degraded in quality. The conflict has also severely affected vegetable production and the poultry sector, negatively impacting nutrition.
