FAO's Sub-regional Emergency and Rehabilitation Office West Africa/Sahel - May 2012
Countries of the West Africa and Sahel sub-region are regularly affected by crises that jeopardize the livelihoods and food and nutritional security of the populations. In 2012, more than 18 million people are at risk of food insecurity in the Sahel. In Mali and in the neighboring countries, the displacements of populations triggered by insecurity worsen the situation. In 2005 and in 2010, the Sahelian countries had already experienced food crises. Besides, the damages caused by floods in 2009 and 2010, and the effects of the post-electoral crisis in Côte d'Ivoire and in the neighboring countries also increased the vulnerability of the populations. These recurrent crises compound the structural weaknesses of the countries characterized by a very low level of human development and poverty rates ranking amongst the highest in the world.
The Sub-regional Emergency and Rehabilitation Office for West Africa/Sahel (REOWA) was created in Dakar in 2006. It provides strategic guidance in terms of disaster risk management for FAO in the sub-region (Regional Office for Africa, Sub-regional Office for West Africa, and the FAO teams in the countries), and ensures liaison and coordination between FAO and the humanitarian network.
