FAO desert locust aerial control operations funded by European Union Humanitarian Aid in Somaliland

The Horn of Africa is facing the worst desert locust crisis in decades. Control operations are key to stemming the upsurge and to avoid desert the locusts moving towards Southwest Asia. Thanks to donors like the European Union Humanitarian Aid, FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture are working to curb the spreading of the pests. “The EU is supporting FAO in Somaliland and in the region to combat the locusts, but also to help those communities which have been affected,” says Mathias Eick, Information Officer, EU Humanitarian Aid. EU funding has allowed FAO to conduct effective aerial spraying with biopesticides and surveillance to conduct surveillance, and effective aerial biopesticide spraying in hard-hit Somaliland, a key breeding ground for the locusts.
