FAO's response

Funds received to‐date have enabled FAO to distribute 458 928 livelihood kits (crop, vegetable, fishing), as well as vaccinating more than 1.5 million animals, and reach more than 1.8 million people in South Sudan.

FAO is currently preparing and pre‐positioning inputs for the upcoming season, while continuing ongoing distributions for 2014, e.g. providing fishing kits and vegetable kits to improve dietary diversification; and undertaking livestock interventions, including disease surveillance, vaccination and treatment during cattle migrations to reduce vulnerability to disease outbreaks. Fuel‐efficient stoves are due to arrive in the coming weeks – 7 000 in early November for distribution in Bentiu; and a further 10 000 in late November.

Funds are required NOW to enable FAO to pre‐position over 6 000 tonnes of emergency livelihood inputs so they reach beneficiaries in time for the 2015 agricultural season and prevent a further deterioration in food security. Local seed recollection
will be the preferred source for crop seeds.
