Iraq - Situation report September 2016
Sep 2016

Key messages

  • Around 12-13 million people in Iraq will likely need humanitarian aid by the end of 2016. Military operations against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Mosul and elsewhere are set to intensify over the coming months, which will likely result in a large number of newly displaced and vulnerable people. The humanitarian operation in Mosul is expected to be the largest in the world this year.
  • FAO emergency activities over the coming months will be critical in restoring the livelihoods of displaced people returning to their homes as areas are liberated from ISIL. Interventions that help to restore livelihoods and agricultural production in Iraq will become increasingly necessary going forward.
  • Urgent donor funding is needed for the upcoming agricultural season. With a funding gap of over USD 42 million, only around 6 percent of funds appealed for have been received to this point, severely limiting the capacity of FAO to help rebuild the livelihoods of vulnerable people in the country.
