Restoration of riverbeds - St Lucia
FAO and the Forestry Department agreed to restore the most affected rivers and tributaries in four Forestry Ranges of St Lucia through the clearing of debris and the removal of important blockages. Together with a first activity in Mabouya Valley, a total of 22.8 km of rivers and tributaries have been cleaned in the project.
This collaboration appeared to be an important rehabilitation activity to respond to the consequences of Hurricane Tomas and simultaneously engendered disaster risk reduction measures by removing blockages that could have cause further problems or even disasters in the event of heavy rains on the Island.
This cash for work activity also provided to the farmers an income support to bridge the income gap as a result of shortage of income between farm rehabilitation and harvesting.
