Worries rise over outbreaks of avian flu in West Africa

The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization is calling for $20 million to prevent the spread of the highly viral avian flu H5N1 across West Africa. The call follows outbreaks of the virus in poultry farms, markets and family holdings in Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Niger, Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana and fears are growing that without timely intervention spread across the region and beyond is inevitable.
