FAO’s rapid response to the food crisis in the Kasai region

Jul 2017

With 3.7 million displaced people, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the country most affected by internal displacement in Africa. The populations in the territories of Tshikapa and Kananga in the Kasai region are facing an unprecedented food crisis, where over 1 million people were forced to leave their homes. Affected families have seen their fields burnt and crops destroyed, and the majority of the population has not cultivated for nine months. Access to food is increasingly difficult and the next planting season will be missed if no assistance is provided.

Since June 2016, the province of Tanganyika is facing a food crisis. An analysis showed that nearly 8 out of 10 households are affected by severe and moderate food insecurity. In addition, more than 524 000 people have been displaced during the last 10 months due to clashes between Twa and Bantu.

Emergency directors raise awareness on the situation through field visits where vulnerable families received agricultural support to restore their livelihoods.
