Nom: Afton Halloran
Position: Stagiaire, Département des forêts
Lieu d’affectation: Rome, Italie
- What prompted you to apply for a position at FAO?
My academic background (MSc. in Agricultural Development) suits very much the specific requirements of FAO. Furthermore, in my particular internship, my supervisor was looking for an intern with a background in scientific communications. I have worked for different newspapers and have experience with the media.
- What are you most proud of in your work?
During my assignment I have had the opportunity to be in contact with different researchers, media, producers, governmental agencies and other stakeholders interested in the subject matter. What I have really enjoyed has been receiving feedback from these actors. This internship has been very interactive.
- What does a normal day at work look like for you?
I am part of a team working on an important publication titled "Edible insects: Future prospects for food and feed security." This publication is very important as it is the first comprehensive publication of its kind on edible insects. It will be launched at the upcoming International Conference on Forests for Nutrition, taking place in Rome from 13-15 May 2013.
- What advice would you give someone wishing to join FAO?
I think that a lot of people are intimidated by approaching this large Organization. I suggest they target specific projects or programmes that they are interested in which match their experience and academic background. My invitation is to be ambitious, and not to be scared to apply for an opportunity at FAO.
