Solar PV systems, solar fridges and cold store rooms

In the context of the EC-funded project on "Strengthening of Livestock Services in Angola", FAO is working on the installation of solar fridges for storing vaccines, based on an innovative technical solution that avoids the use of batteries to store electricity, and of photovoltaic systems intended to power existing cold storage rooms for vaccines in the Kunene region of Angola. These systems will also be used to power off-grid rural veterinary centers aimed in part to serve small-scale livestock herders.

In Somalia FAO is improving the marketing capacity for coastal communities through distribution of post-harvest equipment under the Emergency Response Programme, through provision of solar refrigerators for chilled/cool storage to fisher folk households with the objective of being able to extend the shelf life of its products and to improve bargaining power with fish traders.
