In Inparuddy, a small fishing village on Sri Lanka’s northern peninsula of Jaffna, boats returning from a night at sea unload the catch. This area was among the hardest hit by the protracted conflict that forced fisher families to abandon their homes and livelihoods for years.

Velumylum Anandavel is the president of the village fishermen’s cooperative. “When we returned here after the conflict all our boats were destroyed. We used to have 80 boats with inboard motors. Now we have managed to buy 40 used boats by selling our wives’ jewelry,” he says
