2002, Rome -- Some 4 500 school-children took part in
a colourful award ceremony in Rome as part of "Feeding
Minds, Fighting Hunger," a programme aimed at
galvanising young people's energy in the fight against
hunger.
Italian television personality
Pippo Baudo hosted a solidarity event, entitled
"We are the World," in
Rome's Palazzetto dello Sport on November 28th.
Ten winners of a poster designing competition received
their awards during an evening of singing and dancing which
included performances by FAO's multi-ethnic choir
"Milk and Chocolate" and Italian group
"Gazosa".
The show was an
opportunity to involve the younger generation in the fight
against hunger, giving them the chance to express themselves
through drawings and slogans on the theme of World Food Day -
Water: source of food security.
The event,
attended by television personalities including Massimo Dapporto,
was sponsored by the Italian Institute of New Trends with the
support and patronage of the regional government of Lazio, the
Ministry of Education and Italian President Carlo Azeglio
Ciampi.
It formed part of Italy's
official celebrations for World Food Day (16 October 2002) which
aims to sensitise young people to the dramatic problem of world
hunger.
Money raised by the students will
go to FAO's TeleFood campaign to fund small projects, seeds
and tools for some of the world's neediest rural
communities.
