The ERP Coordination Unit participated in the Sixth International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VI) entitled “Living and learning for a viable future: the power of adult learning” which took place in Belém, Brazil, from 28 November to 6 December 2009. The ERP Coordination Unit chaired a workshop on “Education for sustainable society and global responsibility” and organized a four-day exhibition for knowledge sharing and advocacy. The Education for Rural People stand displayed learning materials on ERP role in capacity development and presented the virtual Toolkit to the CONFINTEA participants. Furthermore the book “Education for Rural People: The role of education, training and capacity development in poverty reduction and food security” has been launched during a lunch time session. The ERP Coordination Unit was a member of the CONFITEA VI Drafting Committee that prepared the Preliminary Draft Belém Framework for Action attached below. The ERP Coordination Unit also participated to the works of the plenary and working group sessions.

The Conference, which takes place once in each decade, convenes more than 2000 participants, including ministers for education, representatives of farmers and women’s organizations, the civil society and other stakeholders. This is the main policy making world event for the adult education sector and focuses on formal and non formal education and training.
