Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia Dipartimento di Economia Politica. Sviluppo e povertà rurale nelle regioni dell’Unione Europea. Paola Bertolini, Marco Montanari The paper represents a first tentative analysis of the phenomenon of rural poverty in in the European Union's regions. In the first part, the paper discusses the problem of defining rural areas and examines the indicators used for international comparisons, notably the OECD definition, which provides the most widely used classification of rurality. Afterwards, we propose a different typology of rural and non-rural areas, based on population density and the share of employment in agriculture. Three categories of regions ("Predominantly Urban", "Intermediate" and "Predominantly Rural") are identified and then compared with regard to the following socio-economic aspects: income, demography, education and labour market. The analysis includes the whole EU-27 territory at NUTS3 level and uses EUROSTAT data, supplemented in some cases by national data. The conclusions of the paper underline the relevance of the rural poverty phenomenon in Europe. 2 - 2 www.fao.org/fileadmin/templates/ERP/uni/Pov-rur.pdf
University of Naples Federico II, Dept. Agricultural Engineering and Agronomy Education and Rural Development in Northern Uganda Guido D’Urso, Luigi A. Smaldone, Elena Sassi The Faculties of Agriculture and Science of the University of Naples Federico II and Gulu University (Uganda) cooperate since 2007 with the primary aim of addressing development issues in education, agriculture, natural resources and environmental management for improved household income. The background to the event is that the long-term effects of civil war are still undermining the development and social progress in Northern Uganda and that there are marked regional disparities between this region and the rest of the country. Needs analysis has shown that the population falls disproportionately short of achieving multiple MDG’s (Millennium Development Goals), thus making them vulnerable to health problems and renewed conflicts. The District of Gulu has benefited during recent years of a strong and successful Italian presence, which has initially supported the health sector, in the Regional and Lacor Hospital and the Health District. In 2005, the University of Naples “Federico II” has significantly contributed to the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine at Gulu University, with joint teaching programs, building facilities and finally graduating the first 40 MDs in January 2010. Following this positive experience, the “GULUNAP” project has been extended to the Agriculture and Science Education sectors. 3 - 6 www.fao.org/fileadmin/templates/ERP/uni/gulu1.pdf www.fao.org/fileadmin/templates/ERP/uni/gulu2.pdf www.fao.org/fileadmin/templates/ERP/uni/gulu3.pdf
University Roma Tre/Department of Economics, "Education for Rural People and Food Security A Cross-Country Analysis" by Francesco Burchi, Pasquale De Muro, 2007 This book is a training tool for capacity development initiatives aimed at educators on rural development, and planners. It is also a useful tool for university professors, students and researchers of the agriculture rural development and education sectors. The theoretical foundation of this research is that being educated improves rural people’s capacity to diversify assets and activities, increase productivity and income, foster resilience and competitiveness, access information on health and sanitation, strengthen social cohesion and participation: these are all essential elements to ensure food security in the long run. The main findings of this research is the high association between food insecurity and primary education and the econometric model shows that primary education is a crucial element to reduce food insecurity in rural areas, even when compared to other factors such as access to water, health and sanitation. 2 - 2 www.fao.org/docrep/010/a1434e/a1434e00.htm
University Roma Tre/Department of Economics, "Reducing children’s food insecurity through primary education for rural mothers: the case of Mozambique" by Francesco Burchi, Pasquale De Muro, 2009 This study investigates the direct contribution that mother’s schooling provides to child food security. It analyses the life-skills (e.g. processing information concerning nutrition, health, and hygiene) and productive skills (professional abilities) that are the most relevant channels through which mother’s schooling indirectly contributes to ensure children food security. This research focuses on rural households living in Mozambique. The analysis has carried out using data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) 2003 on 4,776 rural children with an age below 60 months. The study is of special interest to school teachers and rural development specialists. It is also a useful tool for university professors, students and researchers of the education sectors. 2 - 2 www.fao.org/fileadmin/templates/ERP/uni/DEMuro.pdf

Università degli Studi "ROMA TRE Faculty of "Economics Masters in Human Development and Food Security 2010/2011. Thesis: Agricultural Biodiversity, Dietary diversity, and child nutritional status: Linkages; social, economic, and cultural conditioning factors in the Lokossa district of Benin In collaboration with Bioversity International. Student: Edgar Wabyona, Advisors: Simon George-Adré (Roma Tre - Master HDFS) Jessica Fanzo (Bioversity International) Utilisation of agricultural biodiversity is declining, straining the ease of diet diversification in households, thus leading to persistent hunger, micronutrient deficiencies, and seemingly to the coexistence of over nutrition in urban areas. In Benin, under nutrition is un-acceptably high, with a stunting rate of over 30%. Agricultural based solutions have been proposed to complement the existing health based approaches. The study explores the linkages among households’ agrobiodiversity, dietary diversity, and nutritional status of children 6 – 59 months, and the socioeconomic mediating factors in Benin. 2 - 4 www.fao.org/fileadmin/templates/ERP/uni/AGBIO.pdf
