Agricultural and Rural Development in the 21st Century:
Lessons from the Past and Policies for the Future

An International Dialogue
9-10 September 2005
Beijing China

The Ministry of Agriculture of the Government of China
and
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

An international dialogue on “Agricultural and Rural Development in the 21st Century: Lessons from the Past and Policies for the Future” was jointly organized by the Ministry of Agriculture of China and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations through the financial support of the Italian Government. The dialogue was held in Beijing, on 9-10 September 2005.

The event provided a forum for forward-looking discussions of the major issues confronting world food and agriculture in the coming century. Rather than just another academic conference, panelists and other participants actively engaged each other in debating these issues.

A background paper prepared for the meeting was used as the basis for discussions. The dialogue resulted in a declaration that was jointly authored by all international expert participants. This declaration will provide a framework for governmental and development organizations in setting the agenda for future food and agriculture policy.
