| ESA is organizing a workshop on Agriculture and Food Security in Afghanistan on 7-8 June 2004.
The main items on the agenda are:
- agriculture and food security issues in a 'crisis state', and state reconstruction
- lessons learned from the FAO programme in Afghanistan
- a strategy to promote food security and agriculture in Afghanistan, based on a critical review of past practice and analysis of likely trajectories of change
Participants have been asked to prepare papers on various topics including Afghanistan as a crisis state, agriculture and farming systems, livelihoods, food insecurity, nutritional concerns, livelihoods and human security for women, the opium economy, markets and trade systems and policies and plans for the development of agriculture. These will form the basis of a book to be published by FAO later in the year.
