Establishment of a food security surveillance unit and integrated support to spring seed distribution and water resources management for drought- and war-affected rural populations

The food security surveillance unit: aims to enhance WFP & FAO's capacity to provide timely and reliable information on the rapidly changing conditions of crisis-affected populations.

Spring crop seed distribution: The general objective is to support the international efforts to assist at-risk farmers to strengthen their food security situation through the distribution of spring seeds, mainly wheat, alfalfa, sorghum seeds, along with fertilizer. Distributions will take place together with on-farm irrigation scheme rehabilitation, with a special focus on remote areas.

Water resources management:
The objective is to increase the food availability and cash income of rural vulnerable families through the rehabilitation and improvement of irrigated agriculture.

Support to the improvement of food security, nutrition and livelihoods

Overall, the project will contribute to the aims of the National Development Framework in reducing the overall food insecurity and vulnerability of poor people in Afghanistan. It will assist in building capacity to generate, analyse and act upon appropriate information for policy formulation and for the better design, targeting and implementation of participatory community programmes in the fields of food security, nutrition and livelihoods.
