Intergovernmental Group on Meat and Dairy Products

FAO's Intergovernmental Group (IGG) on Meat, established by the Committee on Commodity Problems - CCP - at its Forty-fifth Session in 1970, provides a unique venue for FAO member government officials to meet and discuss current and prospective aspects of livestock markets and trade.

In this biennial forum, the current challenges facing the industry are examined, including those which can impact on livestock development, marketing, trade and value-addition. Discussions are intended to lead to a broader understanding of the issues facing livestock industries and more effective policy formulation. Increasingly, technical side events are organized in conjunction with the IGG to facilitate a dialogue between FAO delegates, international policy makers, and the private sector. Linkages with other international organizations and commodity bodies are encouraged. The following observer groups attended the last IGG: the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International Dairy Federation (IDF), the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the International Meat Secretariat. Dairy products were included under the mandate of the Group in 2002. The Group also also oversees a Sub-Group on Hides and Skins that meets separately.

The last Session was held from 13 to 16 November 2006 at FAO Headquarters in Rome. The IGG is open to official delegates and observers only. Technical side events (symposia) are open to the wider public.
