BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE MEETING
To support global efforts to improve statistics in

in close collaboration with the Agency of Statistics, Republic of
Kazakhstan, organized the above workshop, from 10-15 July 2005 in
the Kazakhstan Hotel, Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan.
OBJECTIVE
The workshop aimed to assist countries
in reviewing their agricultural statistical system with a view to
developing an integrated programme of censuses and sample surveys
along with the use of crop forecasting techniques, reporting systems
and administrative records.
The Programme of the workshop addressed the following
main issues:
1. Food and agricultural statistics in the
national statistical system
2. Agricultural statistical frameworks
3. Agricultural surveys
4. Crop forecasting
5. Data management and dissemination (CountryStat)
5. World Programme for the Census of Agriculture 2010
6. Review of existing national statistical systems
INVITED PARTICIPANTS
In addition to 5 national participants,
about 23 participants from 11 selected countries: Afghanistan, Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Mongolia,
Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan were expected to
participate in the Workshop. There were two high-level representatives
from each country, one representing the Central Statistical Office
and the other representing the Ministry of Agriculture.
Resource persons and representatives
from the FAO Statistics Division in Rome were invited.
The workshop provided a forum for
senior planning and statistical personnel in these countries to
discuss relevant issues associated with the design and implementation
of an agricultural statistics system in the context of a market
economy context.
Selected resource persons made
presentations and lead discussions on problems, issues and developments
in agricultural statistics systems, and helped participants focus
on a review of their respective national agricultural statistical
systems. During the workshop, the participants of each country made
brief presentations on the agricultural statistics system in their
country, highlighting the issues affecting collection, processing
and dissemination of agricultural statistics in the move towards
a market economy. The country participants acted as discussants
for selected topics (see agenda)
for which a separate presentation was prepared.
