"Moving towards an Agricultural Statistics System for the Market
Economy"

BACKGROUND
The workshop was designed to support global efforts
to improve statistics in the context of the market economy. Specifically,
it aims to assist countries in reviewing their agricultural statistical
system with a view to developing an integrated programme of censuses
and sample surveys along with the use of reporting systems and administrative
records.
The meeting was attended by participants from Albania
(3), Armenia (3), Azerbaijan (3), Bosnia and Herzegovina (1), Georgia
(3), Romania (3) and Moldova (5).
FAO provided five resource-persons for the meeting, i.e. 2 staff
members and 3 consultants.
OBJECTIVE
The following substantive topics were discussed at
the meeting on the basis of invited and supporting papers prepared
and conference room documents that countries and organisations had
contributed:
- The framework of an integrated system of agricultural statistics
- Sources and methods of data collection
- Agricultural census
- Statistical surveys
- Other types of surveys
- Farm management data
- Reporting system
- Distribution Statistics
- Use of statistical information for food policy and agricultural
development
- Data processing, data dissemination
- Statistical data quality
- Review of existing national statistical systems.
The workshop provided a forum for senior planning
and statistical personnel in these countries to discuss relevant
issues associated with the design and implementation of an agricultural
statistics system in a market economy context.
The workshop was conducted in English with simultaneous interpretation
in Russian.
