Monitoring and coordination of emergency agricultural operations

The overarching goal of the intervention in Zimbabwe is to improve the food security status of vulnerable, agriculturally-based households by enabling them to improve their self-reliance through increased production of and access to food, thereby reducing dependency on food aid.

Immediate Objective 1 of the Plan of Action seeks to stabilise and even increase the possibility of higher agricultural production in communal and peri-urban areas. An initial planning estimate of 400 000 beneficiary households was based on previous assessment reports, although the total need is likely much greater. The numbers will be refined in magnitude and geographic distribution based on the August 2002 VAC vulnerability assessment.
