CHAPTER 2 - METHODOLOGY APPLIED

SUMMARY

Most countries collected data through an interview of agricultural holders by census enumerators. In cases when the agricultural holders were not able to provide data on areas, mostly in Africa, objective measurements on sampling bases were undertaken. The enumeration by mail was rarely used, while no country reported use of modern methods, such as interview by telephone or enumeration by use of hand-held computers.

Information is provided in this Chapter on use of sampling in agricultural censuses. Although the word  “census” implies complete enumeration, the FAO Programme accepts the possibility to undertake a sample census in countries where the resources are lacking. Thus in 20 out of 80 countries shown in this report sampling was used instead of complete enumeration. In three of these countries (Albania, Colombia and Fiji) the area sampling frame method was used, demonstrating the applicability of this method for agricultural census purposes. Other 8 countries used sampling as a supplement to the complete enumeration in various ways.
